Using Your NDIS Funding for Sensory Products
Navigating the NDIS can feel like learning a whole new language. Between the acronyms, the plans, and figuring out what is actually covered, it is a lot for any parent to manage. We have been there, and we know how confusing it can be when you are just trying to get the right tools to support your child's daily life.
One of the most common questions we get asked is whether parents can use their NDIS funding for sensory products from our store. The short answer is yes, in many cases, but it depends entirely on how your child's plan is managed and what their specific goals are.
A quick disclaimer: We are sharing our experience as a store providing these products, not as financial or NDIS advisors. Always check with your plan manager or support coordinator if you are unsure about what your specific plan covers.
Are Sensory Toys NDIS Approved?
This is probably the number one search term we hear: "NDIS sensory toys Australia." The truth is, the NDIS does not technically "approve" specific toys. Instead, they look at whether a product is a "reasonable and necessary" support that relates directly to the goals outlined in your child's NDIS plan.
If your child's plan includes goals around emotional regulation, building fine motor skills, or increasing focus, then items that support those goals can often be claimed under the Core Supports (Consumables) budget.
How to Claim NDIS Funding for Sensory Products at Calm Cove Kids
At Calm Cove Kids, we are not a registered NDIS provider. However, if your child is self-managed or plan-managed, you can still purchase from us and claim the cost back through your NDIS funding.
Here is how the process usually works for our customers:
For Self-Managed Plans
If you are self-managing your child's NDIS funds, the process is very straightforward. You simply shop on our website as normal and pay for the items at checkout. Once your order is complete, we will email you a tax invoice that includes all the necessary details (like our ABN and a breakdown of the items). You then use this invoice to submit a claim through the NDIS portal, and they will reimburse you directly into your nominated bank account.
For Plan-Managed Plans
If you use a Plan Manager, you have two options. The first is to pay upfront, just like a self-managed participant, and then send our tax invoice to your Plan Manager for reimbursement. This is often the quickest way to get your items.
The second option is to have your Plan Manager pay us directly before we ship the items. To do this, you can usually add items to your cart, take a screenshot or print the cart page, and send that to your Plan Manager to request an invoice from us. We are always happy to generate a manual invoice for your Plan Manager if you email us your order details.
Popular NDIS-Funded Sensory Tools
When parents are looking for NDIS funding sensory products, they are usually looking for tools that provide specific therapeutic benefits. Here are a few examples of products from our store that are frequently purchased using NDIS funds:
Weighted Items for Regulation: Products like the Mindful and Co Kids Charlie Weighted Puppy or a Weighted Lap Pad are incredibly popular. They provide deep pressure input, which can be essential for kids who need help calming their nervous system to focus or sleep.
Oral Sensory Supports: For children who seek oral input, safe chewable items are a necessity, not just a toy. The Jellystone Robot Chew Pendant is a frequent choice because it is durable, discreet, and helps prevent children from chewing on unsafe objects or their clothing.
Fidgets for Focus: Quiet fidget tools are often claimed as they directly support a child's ability to concentrate in the classroom or manage anxiety in public spaces. The Kaiko Bopster Spin Ball and the Kaiko Fidgets Bookmark are great examples of tools that serve a clear, functional purpose.
A Final Tip on NDIS Claims
When claiming sensory items, it is incredibly helpful to have a letter of recommendation from your child's Occupational Therapist. While it is not always strictly required for low-cost items under the Consumables budget, having an OT clearly state how a specific type of product (like a weighted blanket or a chew necklace) supports your child's NDIS goals makes the claiming process much smoother and protects you if the NDIS ever audits your claims.
We know the paperwork can be exhausting, but getting the right tools into your child's hands is always worth it. If you need any help with invoices or have questions about specific products for your NDIS claim, please just reach out. We are here to help make the process as easy as possible.
